When Croatia signed the Kyoto protocol agreement, it stated that Croatia will have to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions, implement programs of energy sufficiency or rational use of energy, diversify its energetic resources etc.
In the time period from 2008 till 2012, Croatia fulfilled its Kyoto protocol demands (5% less CO2 emissions in this period). Nowadays, the second commitment of Kyoto protocol is actual. It states that in period from 2013 till 2020, Croatia will have to decrease its greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent, and increase use of renewable resources by 20%. One option in decreasing carbon dioxide and rest of greenhouse gases is to capture CO2 and store underground, and second option is to add energy to already existing electricity network obtained through small hidroenergy plants and renewable resources
